The Langston Hughes Project Presented by Pacific Symphony & Irvine Barclay Theatre
02.25.22
In a perfect way to celebrate Black Heritage Month, Ron McCurdy and his Quartet will take the stage at Irvine Barclay Theatre on Feb. 27, joined by a 55-piece orchestra from Pacific Symphony and performing while set to the poetry of Langston Hughes. “The Langston Hughes Project” is an homage to the struggle for artistic and social freedom at the beginning of the 1960s.
It’s a multimedia concert performance of the poet’s jazz poem suite titled, Ask Your Mama: Twelve Moods for Jazz.
It is a twelve-part epic poem which Hughes scored with musical cues drawn from blues and Dixieland, gospel songs, boogie-woogie, bebop, progressive jazz, Latin “cha cha,” Afro-Cuban mambo music, German lieder, Jewish liturgy, West Indian calypso, and African drumming—a creative masterwork left unperformed at his death.
“The Langston Hughes Project” takes place on Sunday, Feb. 27 at 7 p.m. at the Irvine Barclay Theatre. Single tickets start at $25. This innovative program is generously sponsored by J.P.Morgan Chase & Co., PIMCO, Lendistry, Irvine Barclay Theatre, Sam and Susan Anderson, PepsiCo, Marsh McLennan, and Ginny Davies.
